Was quälst du mich, o Mißgeschick!
Will der Gedanke mich nicht fliehen?
Ich sauge Lust aus ihrem Blick.
Hinweg! Ach, mächtig fühl'ich's glühen!

In tiefbewegter Brust
regt sich ein leises Sehnen,
kaum meiner selbst bewußt,
darf ich dies Glück nicht wähnen.

O schweig, betrognes Herz!
Verstummt, vergebne Klagen!
Dem Manne ziemt nicht Schmerz,
er muß mit Fassung tragen.

O ongeluk, wat kwel je mij!
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)  after the German (Deutsch)
O ongeluk, wat kwel je mij!
Houd jij mij altijd in de boeien?
Als ik haar zie word ik dolblij.
Ga weg! Ach, machtig voel ik 't gloeien!

In mijn gekwelde hart
Roert zich een zacht verlangen,
Dat ook mijzelf verwart:
Mag 'k zulk geluk ontvangen?

O zwijg, bedrogen hart!
Houd op vergeefs te klagen!
Een man door 't lot getart,
Hij moet het kalm verdragen.
