Freude, Königin der Weisen, Die, mit Blumen um ihr Haupt, Dich auf güldner Leier preisen, Ruhig, wenn die Bosheit schnaubt: Höre mich von deinem Throne, Kind der Weisheit, deren Hand Immer selbst in deine Krone Ihre schönsten Rosen band. Rosen, die mit frischen Blättern, Trotz dem Nord, unsterblich blüh'n, Trotz dem Südwind, unter Wettern. Wenn die Wolken Flammen sprüh'n, Die dein lockicht Haar durchslingen, Nicht nur an Cytherens Brust, Wenn die Grazien dir singen, Oder bei Lyäens Lust. Sie bekränzen dich in Zeiten, Die kein Sonnenblick erhellt, Sahen dich das Glück bestreiten, Den Tyrannen unsrer Welt, Der um seine Riesenglieder Donnerndes Gewölke zog, Und mit schrecklichem Gefieder Zwischen Erd' und Himmel flog. Dich und deine Rosen sahen Auch die Gegenden der Nacht Sich des Todes Throne nahen, Wo das kalte Schrecken wacht. Deinen Pfad, wo du gegangen, Zeichnete das sanfte Licht Cynthiens mit vollen Wangen, Die durch schwarze Schatten bricht. Dir war dieser Herr des Lebens, War der Tod nicht fürchterlich, Und er schwenkete vergebens Seinen Wurfspiess wider dich: Weil im traurigen Gefilde Hoffnung dir zur Seite ging Und mit diamantnem Schilde Über deinem Haupte hing. Joia, reina dels savis que, coronada de flors, ets lloada damunt una lira d'or, en silenci, quan la maldat alena: escolta'm des del teu tron, filla de la saviesa, la mà de qui sempre posa, a la teva corona, la més formosa garlanda de roses. Roses, que amb pètals novells, malgrat el vent del nord o del sud, floreixen immortals, en qualsevol temps. Quan els núvols plovisquegen flames que els teus arrissats cabells embullen, no solament al pit d'Afrodita, quan les Gràcies et canten o en els plaers de Dionís. Et coronen en els moments quan no brilla cap raig de sol, et veieren impugnar la fortuna, car el tirà del nostre món que, a l'entorn dels seus membres gegantins, atragué núvols de tempesta i amb un horrible plomatge, volà entre el cel i la terra. Tu i les teves roses veiéreu també els verals de la nit apropar-se al tron de la mort, on vetlla el fred esglai. El teu camí, per on anaves, el senyalava la llum suau d'Artemisa amb les galtes plenes que travessa les negres ombres. A tu, que com aquest Senyor de la Vida, no t'espanta la mort, i ell brandà, en va, el seu dard contra tu: perquè en els tristos camps l'esperança et fes costat i amb escut adamantí penjà damunt el teu cap. A les meves agosarades cordes, he ensenyat la teva sonora lloança, que potser en temps futurs escoltarà la posteritat que encara no ha nascut; he resseguit els florits viaranys per on tu camines i, de les ribes procel·loses, algunes porten cap a tu. Deessa, així sia, jo imploro al teu poeta sempre benvolent que menystingui la fulgent fortuna i sigui ric tot i sense or; que la seva vida, certament retirada, però sense esclavitud, sense màcules, sense maldecaps, sigui fidel als savis amics!
