Zum Donaustrom, zur Kaiserstadt
Geh' ich in Bangigkeit:
Denn was das Leben Schönes hat,
[Entschwindet]1 weit und weit.
Die Berge [weichen]2 allgemach,
Mit ihnen [Thal]3 und Fluß;
Der Kühe Glocken läuten nach,
Und Hütten nicken Gruß.
Was starrt dein Auge thränenfeucht
Hinaus in blaue Fern'?
Ach, dorten weilt ich, unerreicht,
Frey unter Freyen gern!
Wo Liebe noch und Treue gilt,
Da öffnet sich das Herz;
Die Frucht an ihren Strahlen schwillt,
Und strebet Himmelwärts.

Le chemin de retour
Language: French (Français)  after the German (Deutsch)
Vers le Danube, vers la ville impériale,
Je vais avec appréhension ;
Car ce que la beauté de la vie a
S'enfuit au loin.
Les montagnes disparaissent peu à peu
Et avec elles les forêts et les rivières ;
Les cloches des vaches sonnent vers moi,
Et les chaumières me saluent de la tête.
Pourquoi tes yeux, humides de larmes, regardent-ils
Vers le lointain bleu ?
Ah, là j'ai séjourné,
Libre parmi des hommes libres.
Là où l'amour et la fidélité prévalent,
Le cœur s'ouvrira ;
Les fruits grossissent sous leurs rayons,
Et cherchent à atteindre le ciel.
