Quand elles tournaient le dos en dansant, elles se regardaient, la tête sur l'épaule, et la sueur brillait sous leurs bras levés, et leurs chevelures fines passaient devant leurs seins. La langueur des leurs yeux, le feu de leurs joues, la gravité de leurs visages, étaient trois chansons ardentes. Elles se frôlaient furtivement, elles pliaient leurs corps sur les hanches. Sie tanzten, eine vor der andern in rascher, flüchtiger Bewegung; immerfort schienen sie sich umfassen zu wollen, und dennoch rührten sie sich nicht an, es sei denn mit den Lippen. Als sie im Tanz den Rücken wandten, sahn sie sich an, das Haupt auf die Schulter geneigt, und der Schweiß glänzte unter den erhob'nen Armen, und ihr feines Haar floss vor ihre Brüste. Das Schmachten ihrer Augen, das Feuer ihrer Wangen, der Ernst auf ihrem Antlitz waren drei sehnliche Lieder. Ganz flüchtig rührten sie sich an und bogen den Leib auf den Hüften. Und plötzlich sanken sie nieder, ihr geschmeidiges Tanzen am Boden zu vollenden . . . Mnasidika kam mir in den Sinn, du tauchtest vor mir auf und alles ward mir unerwünscht, außer deinem lieben Bild.
