Du fatter ej Bølgernes evige Gang,
Ej Aanden, som svulmer i Tonernes Klang,
Ej Følelsen dybt i Blomstens Duft,
Sollysets Flamme mod Storm og Luft,
De Fugles Kviddren af Længsel og Lyst,
Og tror dog, Du fatter en Digters Bryst?

Der svulmer det mer end i Bølgens Gang,
Der findes jo Kilden til hver en Sang,
Der voxer Blomsten med evig Duft,
Der brænder det uden den kjølende Luft,
Der kjæmpe Aander i Længsel og Lyst,
De kjæmpe mod Døden dybt i hans Bryst!

2. Du fasst nicht der Wogen ewigen Gang

Du fasst nicht der Wogen ewigen Gang
noch den Geist, der erblüht in der Töne Klang,
noch das tiefe Empfinden der Blüten Duft,
der Sonne Flamme gen Sturm und Luft,
der Vögel Zwitschern voll Sehnsucht und Lust
und glaubst doch zu fassen des Dichters Brust?

Sie erhebt sich über der Wogen Gang,
und ihr entspringt doch ein jeder Gesang,
aus ihr sprießen Blumen mit ew’gem Duft,
ein Feuer brennt dort ohne kühlende Luft,
in ihr kämpft der Geist der Sehnsucht und Lust,
kämpft gegen den Tod tief in seiner Brust.
