« Conduis-moi, beau gondolier, Jusqu'à Rialto, dit-elle : Je te donne mon collier, Et la pierre en est si belle !» Pourtant elle eut un refus : « C'est trop peu, sur ma parole, Pour entrer dans ma gondole. Non ; Gianetta, je veu plus. » « Tiens, je sais un lamento ; Je le chanterai, dit-elle, En allant à Rialto ; La musique en est si belle !» Pourtant elle eut un refus : « Quoi ! Pour une barcarole, Vous, entrer dans ma gondole ! Non ; Gianetta, je veux plus. » Son chapelet dans les mains, « Tiens, le veux-tu?" lui dit-elle : L'évêque en bénit les grains, Et la croix en est si belle !» Pourtant elle eut un refus : « Quoi, pour ce pieux symbole, Vous, entrer dans ma gondole ! Non ; Gianetta, je veux plus. » Sur le canal cependant Je le vis ramer près d'elle, Et rire en la regardant. Qu'avait donné cette belle ? Elle aborda, l'air confus. Lui, fidèle à sa parole, Remonta dans sa gondole Sans rien demander de plus.

Fahr' mich hinüber, junger Schiffer, Nach dem Rialto fahre mich! Sieh'! dieses Halsband nimm zum Lohne; Ich hab' es längst bestimmt für Dich. -- Der Schiffer spricht: "Nein, Gianetta! Der Lohn ist wahrlich gar zu klein, Und soll ich Dich hinüberfahren, So kann's um diesen Preis nicht seyn." Fahr' mich hinüber, junger Schiffer! Ich weiß ein wunderlieblich Lied; Das sing' ich Dir, indeß die Gondel Dahin auf leichter Welle zieht. -- Der Schiffer sprach: "Nein, Gianetta! Ich fahre nicht für solchen Lohn, Was hülfe mir Dein schönstes Liedchen? Der süße Klang ist schnell entfloh'n." Fahr' mich hinüber, junger Schiffer! Und nimm das Beste, was ich hab', Den Rosenkranz, den mir der Bischof Am letzten Ostertage gab. -- Der Schiffer sprach: "Nein, Gianetta! Dein Rosenkranz genügt mir nicht; Hast Du nichts Bess'res mir zu geben, Du holdes Engelsangesicht?" Doch seh' ich jetzt die Gondel schwimmen Hin über die bewegte Fluth, Und drinnen sitzt mit Gianetta Der Schiffer froh und wohlgemuth. Sie landen an, und Gianetta, Sie eilte schnellen Schritt's davon. Was hat dem Schiffer sie gegeben? Er war zufrieden mit dem Lohn! --
