[Fahr']1 mich hinüber, [schöner]2 Schiffer, Nach dem Rialto fahre mich: Hier, dieses Halsband nimm zum Lohne, Ich hab' es längst bestimmt für dich! Der Schiffer spricht: "Nein, Gianetta! Der Lohn ist wahrlich gar zu klein, Und soll ich dich hinüberfahren, So kann's um diesen Preis nicht sein!" Fahr' mich hinüber, schöner Schiffer, Ich weiß ein wunderlieblich Lied, Das sing' ich dir, indeß die Gondel Dahin auf leichter Welle zieht. -- Der Schiffer spricht: "Nein, Gianetta! Ich fahre nicht für solchen Lohn, Was hülfe mir dein schönstes Liedchen, Der süße Klang ist schnell entfloh'n!" Nimm diesen Rosenkranz zum Lohne, Es ist das Beste, was ich hab', Der Bischof ihm am Ostertage Den Segen und die Weihe gab. Der Schiffer spricht: "Nein, Gianetta! Der Rosenkranz genügt mir nicht; Hast du nichts Bess'res mir zu geben, Du holdes Engelsangesicht?" Jetzt seh' ich dort die Gondel schwimmen Schnell über die bewegte Fluth, Und drinnen sitzt mit Gianetta Der Schiffer froh und wohlgemuth; Sie landen an und Gianetta, Sie eilet schnellen Schritt's davon. Was hat dem Schiffer sie gegeben? -- "Er war zufrieden mit dem Lohn!"

Porta’m a l’altre costat, formós gondoler, porta’m al Rialto: aquí, pren aquest collaret com a pagament, fa molt de temps que l’he reservat per a tu! El gondoler diu: “No, Gianetta! El seu valor és en realitat massa petit, si t’haig de portar a l’altre costat, no pot pas ser per aquest preu!” Porta’m a l’altre costat, formós gondoler, conec una dolça, meravellosa cançó, la cantaré mentre la gòndola navega cap allà damunt les ones lleugeres. El gondoler diu: “No, Gianetta! No et porto per aital pagament, de què em serveix la teva bonica cançó, el seu dolç so ràpidament s’esvaneix!” Pren aquest rosari com a pagament, és la cosa més valuosa que tinc, el dia de Pasqua el bisbe el va beneir i consagrar. El gondoler diu: “No, Gianetta! El rosari no és suficient per a mi, no tens res millor per donar-me, tu, encisador rostre d’àngel?” Ara veig allà la gòndola navegant veloç damunt les mogudes aigües, i a dins amb la Gianetta hi ha el gondoler content i alegre; aborden i Gianetta se’n va de pressa amb passos ràpids. Què li ha donat al gondoler? – “Ell sembla satisfet amb el pagament!”
