Jeg synger de Viser, som jeg vil,
Og som jeg kan;
Jeg tager dem ej fra nogen anden.
Er jeg derfor en fuglefri Mand?
Skal jeg derfor korrekses af «Standen»? --
Lad Sangerlauget være, som det vil
Jeg er den, som jeg er, og ingen anden.
 
Mine Gaver mig selv ej jeg gav,
Har faaet dem til Laans, at forrente;
Jeg maa spytte i Bøssen brav,
Hver Gang jeg et Laan mig vil hente:
Naturen, vor hjælpsomme Moder,
Har en Skyldherres ørnehaarde Blikke;
Jeg ved, der er ringere Boder,
Hvor [der laanes]1; -- dem søger jeg ikke.
 
Men har jeg betalt, hvad jeg skal,
Saa sætter jeg Hatten, som jeg vil,
Og som den kan
Uden at klemme mig om Panden;

Je ne me suis pas attribué mes dons,
Je les ai eus en prêt, portant intérêts ;
