Höstkvällen

Hur blekt är allt, hur härjat, vissnat, dött!
Var är den blomning nu, som sommarn fött?
I dalen domnar allt, i skogen tiges,
Och till en grav den skumma jorden viges.

Dock, ögat lyftes sällt från graven opp,
En högre verld har grytt för hjertats hopp,
I jordens skymning klarna stjernelanden,
Och oförgängligt ler ett hem mot anden.

Så drömmer jag i höstens kväll och ser
Hur lövet faller stelt från björken ner,
En naken strand i vikens djup sig speglar,
Och över månen silvermolnet seglar.

Soir d'automne

Comme tout est pâle, comme ravagé, flétri, mort !
Où sont passées les floraisons que l'été enfanta ?
Dans la vallée tout s'engourdit, dans la forêt tout est silence,
Et la terre obscurcie est destinée à devenir un tombeau.

Pourtant un regard bienheureux s'élève hors du tombeau,
Un monde plus élevé est né pour emplir le cœur d'espérance,
Le monde des étoiles éclaire le crépuscule de la terre,
Et une terre impérissable sourit à l'esprit.

Je rêve ainsi par un soir d'automne et vois
Comment la feuille transie tombe du bouleau,
La plage déserte se reflète sur la baie,
Et le nuage d'argent fait voile devant la lune.
