Wag' es selber kaum verstohlen
deinen Namen mir zu stammeln;
ist mir immer doch, als müßt' ich
still mich erst zur Andacht sammeln.

Und ich muß es schweigend leiden,
darf nicht heil'gen Zorns entbrennen
wenn die Andern ohne Scheu mir
diese keuschen Laute nennen, --

mit denselben Lippen nennen,
die des Neides Siegel tragen,
die mit Kuß und Lächeln feilschen,
die zur Lüge Weisheit sagen!

Fort! ich will aufs Pferd mich werfen,
in die freie Flur es lenken,
will zu meiner Mutter flüchten:
ganz in Reinheit Dein zu denken.

C'est à peine si j'ose bafouiller
furtivement ton nom ;
c'est toujours comme si je devais
d'abord me recueillir en prières.

Et je dois souffrir cela en silence,
Je ne peux m'enflammer d'une divine colère
lorsque les autres, sans vergogne
profèrent ces chastes syllabes,

les prononcent de ces mêmes lèvres
qui portent le sceau de la jalousie,
qui marchandent avec baisers et sourires,
qui disent la sagesse pour le mensonge !

Partons ! Je vais me jeter sur mon cheval,
Le mener vers la campagne ouverte,
Me réfugier chez ma mère :
En toute pureté, penser à toi.
