Durchhaucht die Kanäle der Nachtluft Spiel, Dann, Liebchen, o sei die Bereite! Dann bist du erspähender Augen Ziel, Dann raschen Entschlusses entgleite! Ein Mantel umhülle den zierlichen Bau, Das Antlitz berge die Larve! Dich erkennet durch Hüllen und Abendgrau Das Auge der Liebe, das scharfe. Ich erschein', ich selber, als Gondolier Und lenke die flüchtige Barke, Und sende musikische Laute dir, Daß Herz dir und Füßchen erstarke. Und heg' ich im Kahne die Beute süß, All herber Entsagungen ledig -- Weit schwinde dein Haus, das entleerte Verlies, Weit hinter uns schwinde Venedig!
