Wenn ich gestorben bin,
Leg' mich auf's Schifflein hin,
Lege viel Feuer drein,
Daß ich verbrenne rein.
 
       2.
Lasse das Schifflein frei,
Singe dies Sprüchlein bei:
"Heymdal, die Liebe dein
War nicht auf Erden mein.
 
       3.
Und wo mein Schifflein steht,
Der mit zu Grabe geht,
Bei dir, o Heymdal mein,
Steht es am harten Stein.
 
       4.
Hart war dein kalter Sinn,
Um ihn ich storben bin;
Nimm bald das Nachtmahl fein,
Daß du kannst sterben rein."
 
       5.
Weicht dir dies Lied den Sinn,
Wisse du Flockenkinn,
Brennen kann Liebe nicht
Hörtest sonst dieses nicht.

When I have died,
Place me upon a little boat,
Lay much fire within it
So that I may burn up cleanly.
 
       2.
Let the little boat go free,
Sing this little song while you do so:
"Heymdal, your love
Was not mine upon this earth.
 
       3.
And beside whom my little boat stops,
He shall come along into the grave,
Beside you, oh my Heymdal,
It stops at a hard rock.
 
       4.
Hard was your cold spirit,
For the sake of which I died;
Take soon the fine evening meal
That you may die purely."
 
       5.
If this song softens your spirit,
Then know, you white-bearded fellow,
Love cannot burn,
Otherwise you would not be hearing this [song].
