Eg veit meg aldri, kor det er laga, 
dei sei', eg er ikkje som eg plagar.
So spör dei meg baade ut og inn,
kvi eg gjeng'e, so mörk i Sinn.

Aa eg, som var no so gla og kaat'e,
eg, veit kje koss, men eg titt maa graate;
eg titt maa graate og grunde stilt,
so spör dei meg, kven hev gjort meg ilt.

Det er 'kje nokon, som illt meg gjere,
men likevel det i Hjarta skjer'e.
Det er liksom eg fær aldri Ro,
den eine Dagen er lang som tvo.

Og naar eg tenkjer, blir Tanken burte,
og naar eg talar, blir Orda korte,
og kor eg legg'e min Hug'e ned,
so svive han baade fra og te.

Je ne sais pas du tout d'où ça vient,
ils disent que je ne suis pas comme de coutume.
Aussi me demande-t-on à droite ou à gauche
pourquoi je suis d'une si sombre humeur.

Oh, moi qui étais si joyeux et folâtre,
je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais je pleure souvent ;
je pleure souvent et médite en silence,
aussi me demande-t-on qui est méchant avec moi.

Ce n'est pas qu’on me fait du mal,
mais bien qu'on m'a transpercé le cœur.
C'est comme si je ne trouvais jamais le repos,
Et qu'un jour durait autant que deux.

Et lorsque je pense, mes pensées s'envolent,
et lorsque je parle je suis à court de mots,
et si je laisse reposer ma tête,
toutes deux sont prises de vertige.
