Skovensomhed

Igennem bøgeskoven 
jeg dig ved hånden førte;
der var så grønt og køligt, 
vi nattergalen hørte.

Det var som hele verden 
med blomster og med grene,
med skyer og med stjerner 
tilhørte os alene.

Vi talte ikke sammen, 
vi kunne intet sige,
som snoede, tause ranker, 
ensomme, lykkelige.

Så frit, afsides var det, 
så ubevogtet, stille,
det var, som om vi intet 
mer ønskede og [vilde]¹.

Durch Buchenwald ich führte
Dich an der Hand; wir gingen
durch kühle Dämm'rung; hörten
Die Nachtigallen singen.
 
Es schien, die ganze Erde,
Die Zweige, Blumen, Steine,
Die Wolken und die Sterne,
Gehörten uns alleine.
 
Wir sprachen nicht zusammen;
Wir konnten gar nichts sagen,
Wie stumm verschlung'ne Ranken,
Einsam, von Glück getragen.
 
So frei war's, abgeschieden,
So unbewacht, im Stillen -
Als ob kein Wunsch mehr bliebe,
in dieser Welt für uns noch zu erfüllen.
