Herz, was bist du bang?

I cannot sing here, Out of the dark struggles within these walls I must raise myself up From passion and deep misery. O joy, within the clear heights To plunge downward and to rise With song To glide above earth’s lands As light and dark streaks below Fluctuate while soaring in flight, From the depths a clashing and rustling and throbbing, The earth incandescent in the dawn of spring, How full of sound is the world! Heart, why are you afraid? You must urge yourself upward! The senses expand, How my breast and wings gleam, How silent and vast it is at the gates of heaven.
