Die Lerche
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Ich kann hier nicht singen
Aus dieser Mauern dunklen Ringen
Muß ich mich schwingen
Vor Lust und tiefem Weh.
O Freud, in klarer Höh
Zu sinken und sich zu heben
In Gesang
Über die gründe Erde dahin zu schweben,
Wie unten die licht' und dunklen Streifen
Wechselnd im Fluge vorüberschweifen,
Aus der Tiefe ein Wirren und Rauschen und Hämmern,
Die Erde aufschimmernd im Frühlingsdämmern,
Wie ist die Welt so voller Klang!
Herz, was bist du bang?
Mußt aufwärts dringen!
Die Sinne tritt hervor,
Wie glänzen mir Brust und Schwingen,
Wie still und weit ist's droben am Himmelstor.

The Lark
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I cannot sing here,
Out of the dark struggles within these walls
I must raise myself up
From passion and deep misery.
O joy, within the clear heights
To plunge downward and to rise
With song
To glide above earth’s lands
As light and dark streaks below
Fluctuate while soaring in flight,
From the depths a clashing and rustling and throbbing,
The earth incandescent in the dawn of spring,
How full of sound is the world!
Heart, why are you afraid?
You must urge yourself upward!
The senses expand,
How my breast and wings gleam,
How silent and vast it is at the gates of heaven.
