Upon my homeland, dear and familiar, The happiness of my heart is founded. Joyfully out into the farthest distance Its image wanders at our side, But the voice of yearning speaks: I am not in my homeland! In my homeland, dear and familiar, The joy of my heart was boisterous. After the golden days of childhood, Let us, when we are plagued by sorrow and anxiety, Happily bear Memory Into the quiet world of our homeland. Toward my homeland, dear and familiar, My tear-wet eyes often gaze When the evening clouds scud And the stars come aglow in the distance, When Nature reminds us Of the green meadows of home. In my homeland, dear and familiar, I wish a house to be built for me; Under a bit of homeland soil It shall be buried with me, When someday my song, dying away, Shall travel upward to my [eternal] home.
