Die finster über den Mond sich zieht,
Sie wird des Lächelnden Licht noch trüben,
Wenn übers Meer schon dein Buhle flieht!

Wie diese Wolke, so hab' ich lange
Beschattet dein Herz, verdürstert dein Tun!
Ich fand dich lächelnd, mit frischer Wange!
Wie warst du glücklich - o Gott, und nun?

Doch hier befrei' ich dich, süßes Wesen!
Wie aus schweren Träumen erwachst du wohl;
Da! - sieh auch den Mond seinen Zauber lösen!
Die Wolke verzieht - Therese, leb' wohl!

That starts darkly the moon to cover,
It will still obfuscate the light of the one smiling,
When your lover is already running away across the seas!

Like that cloud, so have I long
Cast a shadow on your heart, darkened your activities!
I found you smiling, with bright cheek!
How you were happy - o Lord, and now?

But here I free thee, o sweet love!
As if awakening from heavy dreams;
There!  See how the moon is breaking its spell!
The cloud disappears - Theresa, farewell!
