Mittagsruhe haltend auf den Matten In der morschen Burg gezacktem Schatten, Vor dem Türmchen eppichübersponnen, Hab ich einen Sommerwunsch gesonnen, Während ich ein Eidechsschwänzchen blitzen Sah - und husch, verschwinden durch die Ritzen... Wenn es lauschte... wenn es meiner harrte... Wenn - das Pförtchen in der Mauer knarrte... Dem Geräusche folgend einer Schleppe, Fänd' ich eine schmale Wendeltreppe Und, von leiser Hand emporgeleitet, Droben einen Becher Wein bereitet... Dann im Erker säßen wir alleine, Plauderten von nichts im Dämmerscheine, Bis der Pendel stünde, der da tickte, Und ein blondes Haupt entschlummernd nickte, Unter seines Lides dünner Hülle Regte sich des blauen Quelles Fülle... Und das unbekannte Antlitz trüge Ähnlichkeiten und Geschwisterzüge Alles Schönen, was mir je entgegen Trat auf allen meinen Erdewegen... Was ich Tiefstes, Zartestes empfunden, Wär' an dieses blonde Haupt gebunden Und in eine Schlummernde vereinigt, Was mich je beseligt und gepeinigt... Dringend hätt' es mich emporgerufen Dieser Wendeltreppe Trümmerstufen, Daß ich einem ganzen, vollen Glücke Stillen Kuß auf stumme Lippen drücke... Einmal nur in einem Menschenleben - Aber nimmer wird es sich begeben!

M'étant arrêté pour le repos de midi dans une prairie, Dans l'ombre dentelée d'un château délabré, devant une petite tour recouverte de lierre, Je songeais à un fantasme d'été En voyant briller la petite queue d'un lézard Qui se glissa et disparut dans une fente … S'il écoutait … s'il m'attendait … Si … la petite porte du mur grinçait … Après le bruit d'un glissement, Je pourrais trouver un étroit escalier en colimaçon, Et par une douce main conduit vers le haut, Trouver prêt là-haut un gobelet de vin … Puis assis seuls sur le balcon, Nous parlerions de rien dans la lueur du crépuscule, Jusqu'à ce que s'arrête le pendule qui tictaquait là, Et que se baisse une tête blonde endormie, Et sous le fin voile de sa paupière S'éveille la plénitude d'une source bleue … Et ce visage inconnu porterait Des traits à la ressemblance et la sororité De toutes les beautés que j'ai rencontrées Sur tous les chemins que j'ai parcourus sur terre … Ce que j'aurais ressenti de plus profond, de plus délicat, Serait lié à cette tête blonde Et uni à une somnolence Qui m'auraient comblé et tourmenté … J'aurais été expressément appelé à gravir Les marches ruinées de cet escalier en colimaçon Pour que dans un plein et complet bonheur Je presse un baiser silencieux sur ces lèvres muettes … Juste une seule fois dans toute ma vie d'homme, Mais jamais cela ne se produira !
