Und eine Thrän' aus Herzensgrund Fällt ihm auf seines Kindes Mund; Schnell küßt er ihm die Thräne ab, Und wiegt es leise auf und ab. De vader buigt, houdt d' adem stil, Beluistert de dromende kinderziel; Hij denkt aan de voorbije tijd Met blijdschap en weemoedigheid. En och, een traan die 'n uitweg vond Valt bij zijn kindje op de mond; Vlug kust hij weg het traantje teer En wiegt het kind zacht op en neer. Zelfs als hij heel de wereld wint, Geeft hij niet weg dit dierbaar kind. Gelukkig reeds op aard' wie leeft En zo zijn schat in handen heeft!
