Lieben, von ganzer Seele, 
Lieben herzinniglich,
Daß nimmer ich's verhehle, 
Heiß lieben muß ich dich!
Wie's kommt? wie kann ich's wissen?
Wohl höher schlägt mein Herz,
Wenn deine Augen grüßen:
Gehst du, erbebts im Schmerz,
Erbebt im heißen Glühen,
Im still verschwiegnen Rausch,
Und Tränen überziehen
Den Blick im Wechseltausch.
Lieben, von ganzer Seele, muß ich dich!

Du wirst mich nie umschließen,
Nie wird dein Aug' mir glühn!
Der Sehnsucht still Vermissen
Wird nie dich zu mir ziehn!
So hoffnungslos mein Lieben?
Gewiß! doch trostlos nicht!
Will Gegenwart nicht trüben,
Zukunft? kenn' ich ja nicht!
Will auch der Trennungsstunde
Schmerz düster mich umwehn,
Lächle mit bleichem Munde:

Estimar, amb tota la meva ànima,
estimar, amb tot el meu cor,
mai ho puc amagar,
t’haig d’estimar ferventment!
Com ha succeït això? Com ho puc saber?
El meu cor batega més fort
quan els teus ulls em saluden:
si tu te’n vas, tremola de dolor,
tremola en una brusent roentor,
en una silent, callada embriaguesa,
i en alternança, les llàgrimes
cobreixen el meu esguard.
T’haig d’estimar amb tota la meva ànima!

Tu mai m’abraçaràs,
els teus ulls no brillaran mai per a mi!
El desig i l’enyor silenciós
no t’atrauran mai cap a mi!
Tan desesperançat és el meu amor?
Certament! Però no sense consol!
No vull entristir el temps present,
el futur? No sé res d’ell!
Encara que la dolorosa hora de la separació
aleni ombrívola al meu entorn,
jo somric amb els llavis esblaimats:
