Lieben, von ganzer Seele, 
Lieben herzinniglich,
Daß nimmer ich's verhehle, 
Heiß lieben muß ich dich!
Wie's kommt? wie kann ich's wissen?
Wohl höher schlägt mein Herz,
Wenn deine Augen grüßen:
Gehst du, erbebts im Schmerz,
Erbebt im heißen Glühen,
Im still verschwiegnen Rausch,
Und Tränen überziehen
Den Blick im Wechseltausch.
Lieben, von ganzer Seele, muß ich dich!

Du wirst mich nie umschließen,
Nie wird dein Aug' mir glühn!
Der Sehnsucht still Vermissen
Wird nie dich zu mir ziehn!
So hoffnungslos mein Lieben?
Gewiß! doch trostlos nicht!
Will Gegenwart nicht trüben,
Zukunft? kenn' ich ja nicht!
Will auch der Trennungsstunde
Schmerz düster mich umwehn,
Lächle mit bleichem Munde:
Jenseits ist Wiedersehn!

Je dois t'aimer intensément !
Comment est-ce arrivé ? comment puis-je le savoir ?
Mon cœur bat très fort,
Quand tes yeux me saluent :
Quand tu t'en vas, il tremble de douleur,
Il tremble d'un feu brûlant,
En une ivresse silencieuse et discrète,
Et des larmes coulent
Qui voilent mon regard.
Je dois t'aimer de toute mon âme !

Tu ne m'embrasseras jamais,
Jamais tes yeux ne brilleront pour moi !
Le désir et le regret silencieux
Ne t'attireront jamais vers moi !
Mon amour est-il si sans espoir ?
Sûrement ! mais pas sans réconfort !
Je ne veux pas troubler le présent,
L'avenir ? je ne sais rien de lui !
Même si l'heure de la séparation
Souffle autour de moi douloureusement et lugubrement,
