Die Nebelhexen brauen im Thal.
Widrige Dünste,
Wallen und weben,
Steigen und schweben
Um Busch und Gestein
Und hüllen mich ein.
Sie greifen tastend
Nach meiner Hand,
Sie hängen lastend
In Haar und Gewand,
Wohin ich dränge,
Sie eilen mit,
In Noth und Enge,
Sie halten Schritt -- --
Wehe -- wer hilft?
Sieh, da schwingt es durch die feuchten 
Nebel sich mit lichtem Schein,
Goldne Funken sprühn und leuchten
In die Dämmerung hinein . . .
Neubelebt, aus Nacht und Bangen,
Heb ich gläubig mein Gesicht,
Und um die erblichnen Wangen
Spielt der Sonne Himmelslicht.

Salvation

The mist-witches are brewing in the valley.
Repulsive vapours
Surge and weave,
Rise and hover
About bush and rocks
And enshroud me.
They reach gropingly
For my hand,
They hang heavily
In my hair and garments,
To wherever I press on
They hasten with me,
In misery and straits
They keep pace -- --
Woe -- who could help?
Lo, something pulsating through the damp
Mists with light radiance,
Golden sparks spray and gleam
Into the twilight . . .
Revived, I lift my face devoutly 
From out of night and anxiety,
And around my pallid cheeks
Plays the heavenly light of the sun.
