Often through the green forest A dear voice rings out, It calls out my name, Oh! so suddenly I feel Such great joy; Is it my beloved? Again I want to see her In front of me through the trees: O my heart, how it floats! But then rushes in the wind The image so swiftly; Tired I stand musing. Where the stream comes out of the rocks, It occurs to me that I succeeded, and I am not late: Proudly the rock regards me, and I look at it again Even though not friendly. Flowers that bloom along the way Seem to call out her name, Every tree whispers Lila: What have you done with her? Show me the right path There is no art in teasing. But everything makes me stumble, Ever more senseless in the tangle, Look, I can hardly make way; But if I could stand before her, Everything would become clear, Or go completely blind.
