De gik langs der legende Hav,
Og Bølgerne dansed saa lette
Med Skum ad den gyngende Slette;
De vandrede langsomt Fod for Fod,
Stansed, og bukked sig hvor de stod;
De søgte sig Rav.

Hun fik, hvad af Havet han tog,
Skønt blev det slebet, i Form af et Hjærte,
Det skinned saa klart som den klareste Kærte,
Hun bar det paa Barmen, hun kyssed det tidt,
Hun gav ham til Gengæld sit;
Men det var et Hjærte, som slog.

Han fo'r paa det gyngende Hav;
Hun mødte ham ingensinde.
Hun bar paa hans Hjærte derinde,
[Bar]1 det hos sit, bedrøvet og glad,
Hun vidste ikke at skille dem ad; --
[Og]2 hans var kun Rav.

Ambre

Ils marchaient le long de la mer folâtre,
Où les vagues dansaient, légères,
Et écumaient sur le flot ondoyant.
Ils avançaient lentement, pas à pas,
S'arrêtaient, se penchaient là où ils étaient,
Ils cherchaient de l'ambre. 

Elle reçut ce qu'il avait pris à la mer.
Poli avec soin, il avait la forme d'un cœur ;
Il brillait, limpide comme la plus claire des flammes.
Elle le portait sur sa poitrine, l’embrassait souvent,
Elle lui donna le sien en échange ;
Mais ce n'était qu'un cœur d'ambre.

Il repartit sur la mer ondulante ;
Elle ne le revit jamais.
Elle gardait son cœur en elle,
Tout contre le sien, dans la peine comme dans la joie.
Elle ne savait plus les distinguer l'un de l'autre ...
Et le sien, à lui, n'était plus que de l'ambre.
