I do not lament for the adornment of the trees That, already bare, sorrow around me; In the cold autumn frost of my dreams A green leaf no longer flourishes; I cannot, as was my wont, carry to the forest My cheerful, spring-fresh spirit -- Only let me lament the roses, The lovely roses have faded! Since they have perished with their delicate colours, With their white and red cheeks, With their sweet scent, Everything is joyless and dead; When they still bore their calyces proudly, The tear of farewell was already inside them -- Only let me lament the roses, The lovely roses have faded! I still know of one rose that is blooming Amid all the desolation on the lea, But no struggling and no labouring Leads me back to her scented trace. No dream of former days, no hope Of future [days] brings me any gain -- Only let me lament the roses, The lovely roses have faded!
