Could I but fly with the birdlets Rejoicingly over mountain and valley, To move my wings lightly and rapidly Early in the morning in the first sunbeam; Above me would curve the clear, Cloud-free canopy of the heavens, Below me in the morning freshness The world would lie in the radiance of spring. I would know well where I would rest myself, I would find precisely the house, too, For from it two eyes, bright and blue, Shine forth a welcome to me! I would sing my loveliest lays Until the dear gaze struck me; And then, happily rejoicing, I would Fly back to my familiar home.
