Könnt' ich mit dem Vöglein fliegen
Language: German (Deutsch)
Available translation(s): ENG
Könnt' ich mit dem Vöglein fliegen
Jubelnd über Berg und Thal,
Leicht und rasch die Schwingen regen
Früh beim ersten Sonnenstrahl;
Über mir wölbt sich das klare
Wolkenlose Himmelszelt,
Unter mir in Morgenfrische
Läg' im Frühlingsglanz die Welt.
Wüsste wohl, wo ich mich ruhte[,]
Fänd' das Haus auch ganz genau[,]
Denn es leuchten d'raus entgegen
Mir zwei Augen hell und blau!
Sänge meine schönsten Weisen
Bis mich träf' der liebe Blick;
Und dann flög' ich fröhlich jubelnd
In mein trautes Heim zurück.

Could I but fly with the birdlets
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Could I but fly with the birdlets
Rejoicingly over mountain and valley,
To move my wings lightly and rapidly
Early in the morning in the first sunbeam;
Above me would curve the clear,
Cloud-free canopy of the heavens,
Below me in the morning freshness
The world would lie in the radiance of spring.
I would know well where I would rest myself,
I would find precisely the house, too,
For from it two eyes, bright and blue,
Shine forth a welcome to me!
I would sing my loveliest lays
Until the dear gaze struck me;
And then, happily rejoicing, I would
Fly back to my familiar home.
