Daß jeder Hörer froh dir lausche!
Es sprenge [unseres]¹ Herzens Tor
Und mächtig durch die Seele rausche.

Du sei der Herold unsrer Lust,
Der Künder unsres tiefsten Sehnens!
Was still [geruht]² in unsrer Brust,
Das ruf herauf in's Reich des Tönens!

Wenn deinen seligen Gesang
Du lässest durch die [Seelen]³ klingen,
Da löset sich der schwerste Drang,
Es ist, als sollt ich mit dir singen.

Es weichet weit die Welt des Scheins,
[Verklärt]⁴ von deines Liedes Flammen.
Mit dir nur fühlen wir uns eins
Und fließen aufgelöst zusammen.

Come sing a lovely song to us,
That all who hear it might listen gladly!
May it burst through the gateway of our heart
And rush mightily through our soul.

Be you the herald of our joy,
The proclaimer of our deepest yearnings!
That which rested silently in our bosom,
Summon it up into the realm of tones!

When you let your blessed singing
Resound through our soul,
The heaviest oppression is eased,
It is, as if I should sing with you.

The world of illusion recedes far,
Transfigured by the flaming of your song.
Only with you do we feel ourselves united,
And dissolving, we coalesce.
