Ich wandle still den Waldespfad,
Es dunkelt die Nacht herein.
Im Grunde rauscht ein Mühlenrad,
Der Grillen Lied fällt ein.

Wie liegt so tief, wie liegt so weit
Die Welt im Mondesduft!
Die Stimme der Waldeinsamkeit
In Windessäuseln ruft:

Wirf ab dein bang erträumtes Weh,
Wirf ab die falsche Lust!
Sie schmelzen hin wie Märzenschnee,
Und öde bleibt die Brust.

Blick auf, wo Stern an Stern entbrennt,
Und sprich dein Herz in Ruh;
Denn ew'ger als das Firmament,
Du kleines Licht, bist Du!

Je parcours en silence le sentier de la forêt,
La nuit y entre et l'assombrit.
La roue d'un moulin murmure dans un fond,
Le chant d'un grillon décline..

Combien profond, combien vaste
Est le monde dans les effluves de la lune !
Dans la solitude de la forêt une voix
Appelle, mêlée au bruissement du vent :

«Abandonne ton mal angoissant et irréel,
Abandonne les plaisirs fallacieux !
Ils se dissolvent comme la neige de mars
Et ton cœur reste désert.

Lève les yeux, là où étincellent les étoiles
Et ordonne le repos à ton cœur ;
Alors, éternel comme le firmament,
Tu es une petite lumière ! »
