Das bewusste erste Veilchen
fand ich heut am Wiesenrand;
Sonnenbuben, blitzeblanke,
huschten kichernd übers Land.
Warte, warte noch ein Weilchen,
und es weht ein weicher West;
Warte, warte noch ein Weilchen,
und die Vögel baun ihr Nest.
Wundersam wird dir zu Mute,
steht die Welt in lauter Blust,
um dein Herz ein Lichtgeranke,
Rosenblühn in deiner Brust.
Frühling, Frühling lacht im Blute . .
Hei, das wird ein wonnig Fest!
Warte, warte . . noch ein Weilchen . . .
Und zum Schluss das Allerbest:
hinter Hecken, in den Gründen
so ein liebes Mädel finden,
das sich gerne,
gar zu gerne,
furchtbar gerne küssen lässt!

Springtime scherzo

The well-known first violet,
I found it today at the edge of the lea;
Sunny lads, bright and shiny,
darted, giggling, over the countryside.
Wait, wait a little while yet,
and a soft west-wind shall blow;
Wait, wait a little while yet,
and the birds shall build their nests.
A wondrous feeling comes over you,
when the world is in utter bloom,
around your heart a garland of light,
Blooming roses in your breast.
Springtime, springtime laughs in the blood . . 
Ha, that shall be a blissful festival!
Wait, wait . . a little while yet . . 
And at the end [comes] the very best:
behind hedgerows, in the vales
to find such a dear girl,
that gladly,
oh so gladly,
terribly gladly lets herself be kissed!
