Still und verborgen 
Trage Dein Weh:
Wonnen und Sorgen 
Schmelzen wie Schnee;
Kummer und Reue, 
Alles zerstiebt! 
Es vergißt selbst die Treue, 
Wie treu sie geliebt.

Die Tage schleichen
So öde dahin:
Dulden und Schweigen 
Ist all mein Sinn.
Mich rührt kein Blühen 
Auf grüner Au,
Kein Wolkenglühen,
Kein Himmelsblau.

Nehmt mein Geschmeide,
Es gleißt wie Licht;
Die Braut im Leide
Begehrt es nicht.
Die güldnen Bänder,
Des Glücks Gewinn, 
Die Prachtgewänder, -- 
Nehmt Alles hin! 

Die Träume verschweben, 
Der Sommer flieht:
Das ist vom Leben 
Das trübe Lied. 
Die Blätter sinken 
Im bleichen Wald;
Die Todten winken . . . 
Ich komme bald!

The forsaken one

Silently and concealed
Bear your sorrow:
Joys and anxieties
Melt like snow;
Grief and rue,
Everything is dispersed!
Even faithfulness forgets
How faithfully it loved.

The days creep
Onward so desolately:
Enduring and keeping silent
Is my whole object.
I am unmoved by any
Blooming upon a green meadow,
By any glowing clouds,
Any heavenly blue.

Take my adornment,
It gleams like light;
The bride in sorrow
Does not desire it.
The golden ribbons,
The spoils of happiness,
The splendid garments, --
Take it all!

The dreams drift away,
The summer passes quickly:
That is the dreary 
Song of life.
The leaves fall
In the pale forest;
The dead beckon . . .
Soon I shall join them!
