Gute Nacht

Schlafet Wälder, schlafet Matten,
  Hold umfang' euch süßer Traum!
Treue Wache halten Sterne
  Über euch im lichten Raum.

Neiget Rosen, neiget Blüten
  Eure Blättchen frisch bethaut;
Schlafet Rosen! Tändelnd wieget
  Euch in Schlaf ein Lüftchen traut.

Schlafet Wellen; doch ihr flüstert
  Fort im Traum und ruhet nicht;
Berget schaukelnd noch im Schooße
  Sehnsuchtsvoll das Mondenlicht.

Schlaf' mein Herz! Doch banges Träumen
  Dieses Herz erbeben macht;
Heimlich wiegt es holde Bilder,
  Seufzt in Sehnsucht: Gute Nacht!

Good night!
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
Go to sleep, forests, go to sleep, meadows,
  May a sweet dream embrace you beautifully!
The stars keep faithful watch
  Above you in the bright universe.

Roses, blossoms, incline your
  Petals freshly bedewed;
Go to sleep, roses! Triflingly
  A sweet little breeze shall rock you to sleep

Go to sleep, waves; but you whisper
  On in your dreams and do not rest;
Rocking, you still bear yearningly
  In your lap the moonlight.

Go to sleep, my heart! But anxious dreaming
  Makes this heart of mine tremble;
Secretly it rocks lovely images,
  Sighs in yearning: Good night!
