Caminant a la nit, de les muntanyes el camí em portà a través dels esblaimats marges dels prats i delicades ombres d’arbres invisibles a la porta oberta de la vella ciutat. Vaig avançar amb precaució per un llarg carrer, i de cap dels negres vidres de les finestres es veia lluir una llum d’espelma que invités a restar-hi, i tot dormia i arreu era de nit. Només quan era de nou al camp i mirant enrere l’estranyament construïda, somnolent i desordenada renglera de timpans, vaig veure una llum suspesa a dalt d’una torre. I allà dalt, a la cornisa, algú vetllava; a l’extrem d’una corda duia una llanterna que es balancejava, s’inclinà i esguardà en la llunyania i els meus passos que a penes eren audibles.
