Ach Lieb' ich soll dich lassen! Mein Herz will's nicht verstehn! 
  Das Haus, die kleinen Gassen, da ich dich zuerst gesehn! 
  Die Schwalben an den Risten des Hauses bauten fromm: 
  Sie werden oftmals nisten, eh' daß ich wiederkomm, 
Und in der Gass' der Flieder, der blühte weiß wie Schnee: --
  Oft blüht und welkt er wieder, bis ich dich wieder seh'.
  Und kehr' ich einst auch wieder, wohl find ich am alten Platz 
  Die Schwalben und den Flieder: -- Gott weiß, ob dich mein Schatz!

  The house, the little streets, where I first saw you!
  The swallows meekly built upon the grilles of the house:
  They shall often nest again until I return,
And in the street the lilac, it blossomed white as snow: --
  It shall often bloom and wilt again, until I see you once more.
  And though I return someday, I shall likely find in their old places
  The swallows and the lilac: -- [but] God knows, if [I shall find] you, my darling!
