Die Verhüllten

Der goldne Schlaf, der schwarze Tod,
die trafen sich ums Abendrot.
Die Heide hing voll Höhenrauch,
ein Vogel rief im Holderstrauch:
Zieh mit!

Es sprach der Schlaf: Ich bring die Ruh,
ich häng die Leidensstunden zu,
ich hülle um die Tagesschlacht
den goldnen Flor der Gottesnacht.
Zieh mit!

Es sprach der Tod: Ich tu wie du,
ich bring auch dir die Gottesruh,
ich hüll um allen Graus der Zeit
den schwarzen Schleier Nichtigkeit.
Zieh mit!

Er reichte sein Gewand ihm dar.
Der andre sah, wie leicht es war.
Er gab zum Tausch das seine hin
und hauchte: Sieh, wie dein ich bin!
Zieh mit!

Die Heide hing voll Höhenrauch,
der Vogel schwieg im Holderstrauch.
Es zogen still gen Morgenrot
der schwarze Schlaf, der goldne Tod.
Zieh mit!

Le sommeil doré, la mort noire
se rencontrèrent au coucher du soleil.
La brume des coteaux couvrait la lande,
un oiseau criait dans les sureaux :
Pars avec moi !

Le sommeil dit : j'apporte le repos,
j'escamote les heures de souffrance,
je voile les combats des jours
du velours d'or de la nuit de Dieu.
Pars avec moi !

La mort dit : je fais comme toi,
je t'apporte aussi le repos de Dieu,
j'enveloppe toute l'horreur du temps
du voile noir du néant.
Pars avec moi !

Elle lui tendit sa robe.
L'autre vit combien elle était légère.
Il lui donna la sienne en échange
et soupira : vois, je suis comme toi !
Pars avec moi !

La brume des coteaux couvrait la lande,
un oiseau criait dans les sureaux.
Ils partirent en silence vers l'aube,
Le noir sommeil et la mort dorée.
Pars avec moi !
