Weithin rief die Mutter nach der Tochter; Von dem fernen Berge gab sie Antwort. "Hast das Linnen fertig du gebleichet?" Mutter, nein, nicht einmal angefangen! Ach, der Bursche trübte mir das Wasser! "Will ihm fluchen, fluche mit mir, Tochter!" "Frost soll ihm das Herz erstarren, Tochter!" Wie die Sonn' um Mittag, theure Mutter! "Rabenschwärze soll den Burschen färben." Wie der Schnee die Bergesgipfel, Mutter! "Hängen soll der Übelthäter, Tochter!" Ja, an meinem weissen Halse, Mutter! "Wunden soll'n das Antlitz ihm entstellen." Wunden? Ja, von meinen Küssen, Mutter! "Brausend soll der Strom ihn mit sich reissen." Und zu mir, zu mir ihn tragen, Mutter!

From far away the mother called to the daughter; From the far-off mountains she gave an answer. "Have you finished bleaching the linen?" Mother, no! I haven't even started! Alas, the young lad sullied the water for me! "I shall curse him, curse with me, daughter!" "May frost cause his heart to congeal, daughter!" As the sun at noonday, dear mother! "May the lad be blackened like a raven!" As the snow [colours] the mountaintops, mother! "The evildoer shall hang, daughter!" Yes, upon my white throat, mother! "May wounds disfigure his face." Wounds? Yes, [wounds] from my kisses, mother! "With a roar the torrent shall sweep him away." And carry him to me, to me, mother!
