Træd stille min Veninde, jeg ved dit Hjerte græder,
naar tavse vi betræder Erindringens Bred.
Dog føres vi bestandig tilbage til de Steder
hvor Sorger og hvor Glæder i Stilhed sænkes ned.

På SøensVande hviler den Haand, som alting slukker,
og lydløst den sig lukker. Og slumrende deri
en mystisk Aabenbaring af Dunkelheden dukker,
som drømmeagtig smuk er, i fjern Melankoli!

I denne tyste Verden hvor al vor Fryd og Kummer
begraves og forstummer i tusindaarig Nat.
Har Seersjæle skuet og anet, hvad den rummer,
og løst den af dens Slummer og løftet Kunstens Skat.

Her færdes vore døde. Og tavse bud de Skikke,
men vi forstaar dem ikke, fra Skyggelandets Kyst.
Veninde, lad os dvæle ved Søens Bred og drikke
for nogle Øjeblikke dens vemodsfulde Trøst.

Le lac des souvenirs

Marche tranquillement mon amie, je sais que ton cœur pleure
quand nous approchons en silence le rivage des souvenirs.
Pourtant nous retournons continuellement à cet endroit
où le chagrin et le bonheur se sont abîmés en silence.

Sur l'eau du lac repose la main qui éteint tout
et sans bruit se ferme. Et somnolente
une révélation mystique émerge de l'obscurité,
semblable à un beau rêve, comme une lointaine mélancolie

dans ce monde de silence où toutes nos joies et chagrins
sont ensevelis et perdus dans des milliers de nuits.
L'âme des prophètes a aperçu et pressenti ce qu'il contient,
et l'a libéré de son sommeil et exalté le trésor de l'art.

Là voyagent nos morts . En silence, depuis le rivage des ombres,
ils nous envoient des messages que nous ne comprenons pas.
Amie, restons près du rivage du lac un instant 
et abreuvons-nous de sa consolation emplie de mélancolie.
