Schön damit zu kränzen,
Reihe dich, o junge Schar,
Dann zu frohen Tänzen!

  Nehmt die Leier von der Wand
Kränzet sie und gebet
Sie dem Sänger in die Hand,
Der sie uns belebet.

  Freuet euch, so lang der Mai
Und der Sommer währet;
Nur zu bald sind sie vorbei,
Und der Winter kehret.

  Lange müsst ihr dann auf's neu
Bei der Lampe sitzen,
Und bei ew'gem Einerlei
Saurer Arbeit schwitzen.

Pluk nu rozen, om het haar
Mooi daarmee te kransen,
Kies je rij, o jonge schaar,
En ga vrolijk dansen!
 
Neem de lier vlug van de wand,
Om -- gekranst -- te geven
Haar de zanger in de hand,
Die haar zal doen leven.
 
Wees verheugd, zolang nog mei
En de zomer duren;
Al te gauw zijn zij voorbij,
Komt de winter kuren.
 
Bij de lamp wordt uur na uur
Dan weer uitgezeten,
En bij arbeid vol van sleur
Is het hard weer zweten.
