Schön damit zu kränzen,
Reihe dich, o junge Schar,
Dann zu frohen Tänzen!

  Nehmt die Leier von der Wand
Kränzet sie und gebet
Sie dem Sänger in die Hand,
Der sie uns belebet.

  Freuet euch, so lang der Mai
Und der Sommer währet;
Nur zu bald sind sie vorbei,
Und der Winter kehret.

  Lange müsst ihr dann auf's neu
Bei der Lampe sitzen,
Und bei ew'gem Einerlei
Saurer Arbeit schwitzen.

Mettez-vous en rangs, jeunes filles,
Pour de joyeuses danses !

Décrochez la lyre du mur,
Posez une couronne sur elle et passez-la
À la main du chanteur,
Qui la fera vivre pour nous.

Réjouissez-vous tant que le mois de mai
Et l'été durent ;
Ils s'en iront seulement trop tôt,
Et l'hiver arrivera.

Pendant longtemps vous devrez alors
Rester assises près de la lampe,
Et pendant une éternelle monotonie
Transpirer sur un travail pénible.
