Friede sey um diesen Grabstein [her]1!
Sanfter Friede Gottes! Ach, sie haben
Einen guten Mann begraben,
Und mir war er mehr;

Träufte mir von Seegen, dieser Mann,
Wie ein [milder]2 Stern aus bessern Welten!
Und ich kann's ihm [nicht]3 vergelten,
Was er mir gethan.

Er entschlief; sie gruben ihn hier ein.
Leiser, süsser Trost, von Gott [gegeben]2,
Und ein Ahnden von dem ew'gen Leben
Düft' um sein Gebein!

Bis ihn Jesus Christus, groß und hehr!
[Freundlich]4 wird erwecken - ach, sie haben
[Einen guten Mann]5 begraben,
Und mir war er mehr.

Hoch auf des Berges Gipfel,
Da steht meiner Liebsten Haus,
Das schaut über Waldeswipfel
In alle Welt hinaus.

Das ist so öd' und traurig,

Flüstert: Lebwohl, lebwohl!

Einst sah ich mein Lieb' wie die Sonne
Ob all den Tälern steh'n,
Da konnte mein Herz vor Wonne
Sein Glück nicht übersehn.

Und jetzt, so weit ich schaue,
Hinaus in's Abendlicht
Über alle die tausend Gaue --
Überschau' ich mein Elend nicht.
