Hei, liukuen, luikuen kulku käy,
ei tunnu jälkeä jäällä.

Yli leikki lentää ja nauru soi
teräskenkä, kirkas ja nuori.
Yli jään ilon kerkeä kilpa käy,
silo kuilujen yllä on kuori.

Elo nuori on irti ja ikävöi,
ei vangitse vanhain huoli.
Niin kielletyn kaunis on kaihon tie,
totta leikiss' on toinen puoli.

Elo nuori on irti ja ikävöi,
povi nousee ja posket vertyy,
ja ulapan tuulet ne unia tuo
ja mieli mennessä' mertyy.

Se seljille sinertyville vie,
miss' enää ei merkkiä, viittaa.
Ei muista yön mustan yllättävän,
ei paluun pimeistä piittaa.

Ei uskokkaan kun jo keskellä on
meren outoja ulapoita,
ylt'ympärille kun kutoo yö
jo kummia kuutamoita.

Kun sydänsyville saapunut
on upottaville saakka,
missä tuntee permannon pettävän
ja ilon tanssiva taakka;

missä kylmintä malttia kysytään,
miten päättää mieletön veikka,
missä naurain ja nousten enää ei
ois korjattu kuperkeikka;

missä kerran viimeisen kääntyä voi
vielä nuori karkelon kansa,
missä vielä talvell' on viikon työ,
missä auki on Ahdin ansa;

mistä korvaa tarkinta tavaten
sävel särkyvän kaunis kaikuu,
missä siipeen ammuttu alli ui,
missä kuoleva joutsen joikuu.

Nurmell' Antero jo nukkuu,
hiljaa heinät häilyy;
sinimetsän käki kukkuu,
pyhä päivä päilyy.

Äiti vaalii, vartioipi,
kestä, uni, kauan!
Äidin virpi vihannoipi,
kasvaa kultasauvan.

Aika vierii toisen verran,
vierii vinhoin rattain,
nousee kesänurmi kerran
taaton unta kattain.

Taaton unta, maammon unta,
uupunutta työtä;
eloon paras uneksunta
Anteron jää myötä.

Antero sen tehdä voipi,
paljon eemmäs ehtii.
Äidin virpi vihannoipi,
kultalehvät lehtii.

ei vanhanakaan herää.
Vain työttömyys se ruostuttaa,
ei kyntö auran terää.

Ja näin ma heitä rohkaisen,
kun väsyvät he milloin:
tuo aika uuden huomenen
ja parempi on silloin.

Ja usein huomen valkeaa
ja työ on yhtä kovaa.
Ma silloin koetan lohduttaa:
Nyt saatte hetken lomaa.

Ja tyytyväisnä työhönsä
he nousee nukkumasta.
Oi, heitä siunaa, Herra sä,
oi, siunaa mökin lasta!
