Du armes, krankes Kind!"

Es ist nicht irdische Musik,
Was mich so freudig macht;
Mich rufen Engel mit Gesang,
O Mutter, gute Nacht!

Ô mère, vois qui ce pourrait être,
À une heure si tardive.

«Je n'entends rien, je ne vois rien,
Ô rendors-toi bien doucement !
On ne te donnerait pas une sérénade maintenant,
Toi, pauvre enfant malade.»

Ce n'est pas une musique terrestre,
Qui me rend si joyeuse,
Les anges m'appellent de leurs chants
Ô mère, bonne nuit.

Da fliegt, als wir im Felde gehn,
ein Sommerfaden über Land,
ein leicht und licht Gespinst der Feen,
und knüpft von mir zu ihr ein Band.

Ich nehm' ihn für ein günstig' Zeichen,
ein Zeichen, wie die Lieb' es braucht.
O Hoffnungen der Hoffnungsreichen,
aus Duft gewebt, von Luft zerhaucht.
