Willst du von dem Lenze singen 
Recht aus voller Sängerbrust: 
Mußt du dich wie Vöglein schwingen 
Ganz hinein in seine Lust, 
Mußt dich unter Blüthen strecken, 
Daß sie dicht dein Haupt umdüften, 
Mußt die Brust den Winden lüften: 
Alle Sinne dir zu wecken, 
Alle Gluthen dir zu kühlen, --
  Du mußt fühlen!

Willst du recht vom Leben singen, 
Seiner Lust und seinem Schmerz, 
Mußt du tief in's Leben dringen, 
Öffnen ihm dein volles Herz. 
Liebe muß dich ganz durchschwingen,
Viele Lust dein eigen werden,
Und manch größter Schmerz auf Erden
Muß zu deiner Seele dringen,
Muß dein armes Herz durchwühlen, --
  Du mußt fühlen!
