English translations of Drei Lieder für 1 Singstimme mit Pianofortebegleitung, opus 11

by Edward Alexander MacDowell (1860 - 1908)

1. Mein Liebchen  [sung text not yet checked]
by Edward Alexander MacDowell (1860 - 1908), "Mein Liebchen", op. 11 (Drei Lieder für 1 Singstimme mit Pianofortebegleitung) no. 1 (1881), published 1884 [ voice and piano ], Leipzig, Kahnt
Language: German (Deutsch)
Mein Liebchen, wir sassen beisammen,
Traulich im leichten Kahn.
Die Nacht war still, und wir schwammen
Auf weiter Wasserbahn.

Die Geisterinsel, die schöne,
Lag dämm'rig im Mondenglanz;
Dort klangen liebe Töne,
Dort wogte der Nebeltanz.

Dort klang es lieb und lieber,
Und wogt' es hin und her;
Wir aber schwammen vorüber,
Trostlos auf weitem Meer.

1. My darling, we sat together
Language: English
My darling, we sat together,
Comfortably in the light little boat;
The night was still, and we floated
on the broad watery road.

The ghostly island, the lovely one,
lay duskily in the moonlight;
there rang out lovely tones,
there the dancing mists waved.

The sounds there grew lovelier and lovelier,
and the dance surged back and forth;
but we floated past,
Comfortless on the wide sea.

2. Du liebst mich nicht  [sung text not yet checked]
by Edward Alexander MacDowell (1860 - 1908), "Du liebst mich nicht", op. 11 (Drei Lieder für 1 Singstimme mit Pianofortebegleitung) no. 2 (1881), published 1884 [ voice and piano ], Leipzig, Kahnt
Language: German (Deutsch)
Du liebst mich nicht, du liebst mich nicht,
Das kümmert mich gar wenig;
Schau' ich dir nur ins Angesicht,
So bin ich froh wie'n König.

Du hassest, hassest mich sogar,
So spricht dein rotes Mündchen;
Reich mir es nur zum Küssen dar,
So tröst' ich mich, mein Kindchen.

2. You love me not
Language: English
 You love me not, you love me not,
 but it only troubles me a little:
 If I only see your face,
 I am as happy as a King.

 You hate me, even detest me:
 so says your red little mouth;
 but if you would just put it up for a kiss,
 I would be much consoled, my darling.

3. Oben, wo die Sterne glühen  [sung text not yet checked]
by Edward Alexander MacDowell (1860 - 1908), "Oben, wo die Sterne glühen", op. 11 (Drei Lieder für 1 Singstimme mit Pianofortebegleitung) no. 3 (1881), published 1884 [ voice and piano ], Leipzig, Kahnt
Language: German (Deutsch)
Oben, wo die Sterne glühen,
Müssen uns die Freuden blühen,
Die uns unten sind versagt;
In des Todes kalten Armen
Kann das Leben erst erwarmen,
Und das Licht der Nacht enttagt.

3.
Language: English
Up above, where the stars are glowing,
Will have to bloom all the joys
That we were refused down here;
Only in the cold arms of Death
Can Life grow warmer,
And the light of Night grow brighter.
