[Sahst]1 du ein Glück [vorübergehn]2,
Das nie sich wiederfindet,
Ist's gut in einen Strom zu sehn,
Wo Alles wogt und schwindet.

O, starre nur hinein, hinein,
Du wirst es leichter missen,
Was dir, und soll's dein Liebstes seyn,
Vom Herzen ward gerissen.

Blick' unverwandt hinab zum Fluß,
Bis deine Tränen fallen,
Und sieh durch ihren warmen Guß
Die Flut hinunterwallen.

Hinträumend wird Vergessenheit
Des Herzens Wunde schließen;
Die Seele sieht mit ihrem Leid
Sich selbst vorüberfließen.

Si tu as vu passer un bonheur
Qui jamais ne se retrouve,
Il est bon de regarder un fleuve
Où tout roule et disparaît.

Ô, regarde dedans, dedans,
Tu te passeras plus facilement
De ce que tu avais de plus cher,
Et qui te fut arraché du cœur.

Regarde le fleuve sans détourner les yeux,
Jusqu'à ce que tombent tes larmes
Et à travers leur chaude effusion, vois
Le flot descendre en bouillonnant.

L'oubli, qui avance en rêvant,
Fermera les blessures du cœur ;
L'âme elle-même avec sa douleur
Se voit passer au fil de l'eau.

Ich sah der Liebe Licht
Im schönsten Angesicht.

Und wandl' ich nun allein
Im Frühling durch den Hain,
Erscheint aus jedem Strauch
Ihr Angesicht mir auch.

Und seh ich sie am Ort
Wo längst der Frühling fort,
So sprießt ein Lenz und schallt
Um ihre süße Gestalt.

3. Printemps de l'amour

Un jour, j'ai vu le printemps
Fleurir dans la plus belle des vallées;
Je voyais la lumière de l'amour
Dans le plus beau des visages.

Et maintenant que seul je parcours
Au printemps les bois,
Dans chaque buisson m'apparaît
Aussi son visage.

Et si je la vois en ce lieu
Depuis longtemps abandonné du printemps,
Un printemps germe et retentit
Autour de sa douce image.
