1. Spruch
 (Sung text)
by August Reuss (1871 - 1935), "Spruch", op. 44 (Sechs Lieder für mittlere Singstimme) no. 1, published 1924 [ medium voice and piano ]
Language: German (Deutsch)
So mußt Du allen Dingen
Bruder und Schwester sein,
Daß sie dich ganz durchdringen,
Daß du nicht scheidest Mein und Dein.

Kein Stern, kein Laub soll fallen --
Du mußt mit ihm vergehn!
So wirst du auch mit allen
Allstündlich auferstehn.

1. Maxim
Language: English
Thus you must to all things
A brother and sister be,
So that they merge with you completely,
So that you do not differentiate between mine and yours.

No star, no leaf shall fall
[But] that you perish with it!
Thus you will with all things
Be resurrected hourly.

2. Im Nebel
 (Sung text)
by August Reuss (1871 - 1935), "Im Nebel", op. 44 (Sechs Lieder für mittlere Singstimme) no. 2, published 1924 [ medium voice and piano ]
Language: German (Deutsch)
Seltsam, im Nebel zu wandern!
Einsam ist jeder Busch und Stein,
Kein Baum sieht den andern,
Jeder ist allein.

Voll Freunden war mir die Welt,
Als noch mein Leben licht war;
Nun, da der Nebel fällt,
Ist keiner mehr sichtbar.

Wahrlich, keiner ist weise,
Der nicht das Dunkel kennt,
Das unentrinnbar und leise
Von allen ihn trennt.

Seltsam, im Nebel zu wandern!
Leben ist Einsamsein.
Kein Mensch kennt den andern,
Jeder ist allein.

2. In the mists
Language: English
Wondrous to wander through mists!
Parted are bush and stone:
None to the other exists,
Each stands alone.

Many my friends came calling
then, when I lived in the light;
Now that the fogs are falling,
None is in sight.

Truly, only the sages
Fathom the darkness to fall,
Which, as silent as cages,
Separates all.

Strange to walk in the mists!
Life has to solitude grown.
None for the other exists:
Each is alone.

3. Herbstbeginn
 (Sung text)
by August Reuss (1871 - 1935), "Herbstbeginn", op. 44 (Sechs Lieder für mittlere Singstimme) no. 5, published 1924 [ medium voice and piano ]
Language: German (Deutsch)
Der Herbst streut weiße Nebel aus,
Es kann nicht immer Sommer sein!
Der Abend lockt mit Lampenschein
Mich aus der Kühle früh ins Haus.

Bald stehen Baum und Garten leer,
Dann glüht nur noch der wilde Wein
Ums Haus, und bald verglüht auch der,
Es kann nicht immer Sommer sein.

Was mich zur Jugendzeit erfreut,
Es hat den alten frohen Schein
Nicht mehr und freut mich nimmer heut -
Es kann nicht immer Sommer sein.

O Liebe, wundersame Glut,
Die durch der Jahre Lust und Mühn
Mir immer hat gebrannt im Blut -
O Liebe, kannst auch du verglühn?

3. Beginning of autumn
Language: English
Autumn is scattering white mists,
It cannot always be summer!
With lamp-glow the evening entices me
Early to come out of the coolness into the house.

Soon trees and gardens shall stand empty,
Then only the wild grapevines shall still glow
About the house, and soon they too shall fade,
It cannot always be summer.

That which delighted me in my youth,
It no longer has the old merry radiance
And does not delight me any longer -
It cannot always be summer.

Oh Love, you wondrous blaze
That through the the happiness and toil of the years
Has always flamed in my veins -
Oh Love, can you fade too?
