English translations of Zwei Lieder für eine Singstimme mit Pianoforte , opus 10

by Eduard Gustav Sabbath (b. 1826)

1. Seelentrost  [sung text not yet checked]
by Eduard Gustav Sabbath (b. 1826), "Seelentrost", op. 10 (Zwei Lieder für eine Singstimme mit Pianoforte ) no. 1, published 1870 [ soprano or tenor and piano ], Berlin, Trautwein
Language: German (Deutsch)
   Gräm' dich nur nicht so viel,
Und bleibe fromm und still,
Dann hilft der Himmel dir zu deinem besten Ziel;
   Glaub', jedes Herzeleid

Text Authorship:

  • by Richard Pohl (1826 - 1896), "Seelentrost"

1. Comfort for the soul
Language: English
   Do not fret all too much,
And remain devout and quiet,
Then Heaven shall help you reach your best goal;
   Believe it, every heartache
Does not last forever,
Let that be your loving comfort in all dreary times.

   If someone has achieved more
Than he himself had expected
Because God’s hand led him in deepest night:
   Therefore you, too, should no longer be apprehensive,
Gaze up to the host of stars,
And into the wide, beautiful world all around you!

2. Gute Nacht  [sung text not yet checked]
by Eduard Gustav Sabbath (b. 1826), "Gute Nacht", op. 10 (Zwei Lieder für eine Singstimme mit Pianoforte ) no. 2, published 1870 [ mezzo-soprano or alto and piano ], Berlin, Trautwein
Language: German (Deutsch)
Im tiefsten Innern
Ein süß Erinnern
Und einen Gruß
Zum Tagesschluß.

Daß Gottes Güte
Mein Glück behüte
Daß seine Treu'
Stets mit dir sei;

Daß deine Seele
Sich mir vermähle
Auf ewiglich:
Das bete ich.

Auf ihn nur [zähl']1 ich,
Uns Beid' empfehl' ich
Fromm seiner Macht --
Nun, gute Nacht!

2.
Language: English
From my deepest core
A sweet reminder
And a greeting
At the end of the day.

That God’s goodness
Will preserve my happiness,
That His trustworthiness
Will always be with you;

That your soul
Be united with mine
For all eternity:
That, I pray.

On Him alone do I depend,
I commend both of us
Devoutly to His might –
Now, good night!
