Ein Reiter durch das Bergtal zieht,
Im traurig stillen Trab:
"Ach! zieh ich jetzt wohl in Liebchens Arm,
Oder zieh ich ins dunkle Grab?"
Die Bergstimm Antwort gab:
"Ins dunkle Grab!"

Und weiter reitet der Reitersmann,
Und seufzet schwer dazu:
"So zieh ich denn hin ins Grab so früh -
Wohlan, im Grab ist Ruh!"
Die Stimme sprach dazu:
"Im Grab ist Ruh!"

Dem Reitersmann eine Träne rollt
Von der [Wange]1 kummervoll:
"Und ist nur im Grab die Ruhe für mich -
So ist mir im Grabe wohl."
Die [Stimme]2 erwidert hohl:
"Im Grabe wohl!"

1. La voix de la montagne

Dans la vallée de la montagne un cavalier
Allait au trot, triste et silencieux :
« Hélas ! Vais-je vers les bras de ma bien-aimée,
Ou bien vais-je vers un sombre tombeau ? »
La voix de la montagne donna la réponse :
« Dans le sombre tombeau ! »

Et le cavalier chevaucha plus avant,
Et cela le faisait pousser de gros soupirs :
« Ainsi donc, je vais bien trop  tôt au tombeau -
Allons, le tombeau, c'est le repos ! »
À cela, la voix dit :
« Le tombeau, c'est le repos ! »

Une larme coule sur la joue
Du cavalier, blême et chagrin :
« Et si pour moi, il n'y a de repos qu'au tombeau -
Alors pour moi, le tombeau est bien. »
La voix caverneuse répliqua :
« Le tombeau est bien ! »

Die Fensterscheiben blinken;
Ich [guck']3 mir fast die Augen aus,
Doch [will mir niemand]4 winken.

Ihr Tränen, bleibt mir aus dem Aug',
Daß ich nicht dunkel sehe.

Je suis passé devant la maison de ma belle,
Les vitres de la fenêtre scintillent ;
Intensivement je cherche des yeux,
Mais personne ne me fait signe.

Vous, mes larmes, ne me montez pas aux yeux,
Que je mon regard ne soit pas trop sombre.
Et toi, mon cœur malade, ne te brise pas
Devant cette douleur bien trop grande.
