Siehst du das Meer? Es glänzt auf seiner Flut
Der Sonne Pracht;
Doch in der Tiefe, wo die Perle ruht,
Ist finstre Nacht.

Das Meer bin ich. In stolzen Wogen rollt
Mein wilder Sinn,
Und meine Lieder ziehn wie Sonnengold
Darüber hin.

Sie flimmern oft von zauberhafter Lust,
Von Lieb' und Scherz;
Doch schweigend blutet in verborgner Brust
Mein dunkles Herz.

Pourtant dans ses profondeurs, où repose la perle,

Je suis la mer. Mes pensées sauvages roulent
Comme de fières vagues.
Et mes chansons, comme un soleil d'or,
Courent par-dessus.

Elles scintillent souvent de désirs enchanteurs,
D'amour et de badinages.
Pourtant en silence saigne, enfoui en ma poitrine,

Mit seinem goldnen Schein,
Da schläft in holdem Prangen 
Die müde Erde ein.

Im Traum die Wipfel weben,
Die Quellen rauschen sacht;
Singende Engel durchschweben
Die blaue Sternennacht

Und auf den Lüften schwanken
Aus manchem treuen Sinn
Viel tausend Liebesgedanken
Über die Schläfer hin.

Und drunten im Tal, da funkeln
Die Fenster von Liebchens Haus;
Ich aber blicke im Dunkeln
Still in die Nacht hinaus.

Dans les rêves les cimes s'agitent,
Le sources bruissent doucement ;
En chantant les anges volent tout autour
De la nuit étoilée bleue.

Et dans l'air alors flottent
Au-dessus des dormeurs
Des milliers de pensées d'amour
De maintes âmes fidèles.

Et en bas dans la vallée elles scintillent
À la fenêtre de la maison de ma bien aimée.
Mais je suis dans le noir, regardant
Tranquillement le monde.
